Johnson County extends data center moratorium
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved extending the county's temporary moratorium on data center development through August 8, 2027. County planning staff said they need additional time to research the industry, conduct site visits, and draft regulations governing data centers.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors extended the county's temporary pause on data center development through August 8, 2027. The moratorium had been set to expire sooner, but supervisors approved the extension to give county staff more time to develop a regulatory framework.
The Johnson County Planning and Sustainability Department said its work includes research, site visits and drafting an ordinance governing data centers. The county retains the ability to end the moratorium early or extend it again, and officials said no data centers had been proposed in Johnson County as of July.
