DeWine signs Ratepayer Protection Pledge as Ohio data center growth continues
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has signed President Donald Trump's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, aiming to prevent the cost of powering large data centers from being passed to residential utility customers. The pledge encourages data center developers and electric utilities to fund the necessary energy infrastructure. Ohio has already implemented a data center tariff for American Electric Power requiring new large-scale data centers to pay for at least 85 percent of their contracted electric capacity.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine recently signed President Donald Trump's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, joining 22 other Republican governors. This non-binding initiative seeks to ensure that the growing energy demands of data centers do not lead to increased electricity costs for residential utility customers.
The pledge encourages data center developers and electric utilities to cover the costs of energy infrastructure required to support the expanding industry. Governor DeWine highlighted Ohio's existing data center tariff for American Electric Power, which mandates that new large-scale data centers fund at least 85 percent of their contracted electric capacity.
Ohio is a significant hub for data center development, with approximately 240 existing or planned facilities. While state leaders champion the economic benefits, some local communities have expressed concerns regarding increased electricity demand, water usage, and environmental impacts stemming from the industry's rapid growth. Major technology companies, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, OpenAI, and xAI, have also signed the voluntary agreement, committing to help prevent data center electricity demand from impacting household and small business costs.
