Pittsburg City Council Moves to Prepare 45-Day Moratorium on Future Data Centers
The Pittsburg City Council voted 4-0 to direct staff to prepare an emergency 45-day moratorium on future data center development, including Phases II and III of the AVAIO project. The proposed pause would not affect AVAIO’s already approved Phase I and is intended to allow additional community engagement and advisory committee work.
The Pittsburg City Council voted 4-0 on Oct. 19 to direct city staff to prepare an emergency 45-day moratorium covering future data center development. The proposal would pause consideration of new data centers throughout the city, including later phases of the AVAIO Data Center project, while leaving the project’s approved Phase I unaffected.
The council reconsidered the moratorium at a special meeting on Oct. 26. Councilmember Juan Banales said the action would provide clarity and time for community engagement, while Councilmember Jelani Killings acknowledged residents’ concerns and said the city would keep them informed as the process continues. Under state law, the emergency moratorium could later be extended if adopted.
