Forum highlights impacts of AI data centers and crypto mining facilities

The National Coalition Against Crypto mining and the western North Carolina Sierra Club recently hosted a public forum at the University of North Carolina Asheville to discuss the escalating environmental concerns tied to the increase of AI data centers and crypto mining facilities across the state. Advocates, including national board member Cyndia Roberson, detailed issues such as rising greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, significant water consumption, and persistent noise. Roberson recounted her personal experience, stating that the constant noise from a crypto mine in Cherokee County ultimately led her to sell her home. In light of these discussions and broader community apprehension, the Town of Canton is currently considering implementing a moratorium on the development of data centers and crypto mining operations. The town has scheduled a public hearing to address these community concerns directly. While acknowledging the problems, Roberson expressed an openness to collaborate on solutions, emphasizing the potential to develop more sustainable models for AI data centers.
