Schumer Faces AI Data Center Protest at Brooklyn Home
Demonstrators protested outside Sen. Chuck Schumer's Park Slope home against proposed federal legislation that would accelerate permitting for AI data centers and energy infrastructure. Activists argue the bill could weaken environmental protections and spur data center expansion, while its impact on an expected Senate vote remains uncertain.
Demonstrators gathered outside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's home in Park Slope, Brooklyn, using a smoking data-center prop and oversized blank check to protest the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act. Activists say the proposed permitting legislation could streamline construction of AI data centers and weaken environmental review requirements.
The demonstration was organized amid a broader campaign by climate and community groups, including Food & Water Watch, New York Communities for Change, 350Brooklyn, Climate Families NYC and Indivisible Brooklyn. More than 160 environmental, health, consumer and religious organizations have also called for rejecting the bill and banning AI data center development on federal lands. The groups' pressure campaign is aimed at influencing Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic lawmakers ahead of an expected Nov. 9 vote.
