NV Energy, Nevada's primary utility provider, recently filed its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) with state energy regulators, outlining its strategy to meet the state's energy demands for the next 20 years. The utility's forecast indicates a substantial 47 percent increase in annual electricity use compared to predictions made just two years prior, a surge largely attributed to significant interest from data center developers. NV Energy reported receiving inquiries for 22,000 megawatts (MW) from data centers, more than double the state's combined northern and southern territories' peak demand of approximately 8,200 MW in 2025.

The utility's proposed plan involves substantial investments in utility-scale solar, battery storage, and geothermal energy, alongside a controversial addition of roughly 1,200 MW of new gas-fired generation for peak demand periods. The plan also includes funding for energy-efficiency programs. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) is tasked with reviewing this proposal to determine the most cost-effective investments for customers.

Julia Hubbard, Nevada program director for Solar United Neighbors, in an opinion piece for The Nevada Independent, argues that the PUCN should mandate NV Energy to treat customer-owned distributed energy resources—such as rooftop solar, home batteries, electric vehicle chargers, and smart thermostats—as viable, competitive alternatives to conventional infrastructure. Hubbard emphasizes that over 140,000 Nevada homes already have solar installations, representing a significant, customer-funded power resource. She advocates for a robust virtual power plant program in Nevada, highlighting successful models in other states like Vermont, California, and Utah, which utilize coordinated distributed resources to reduce grid strain and lower costs for all customers.
