At a recent monthly meeting, the Cumberland County Commission in Tennessee took significant steps regarding data center development, with all commissioners present except Commissioner Sherrill casting unanimous votes on two resolutions.

First, the Commission adopted Resolution 06-2026-30, formally approving the County Powers Act under Tennessee Code Annotated 5-1-118. This measure provides the county with additional legal authority to address local issues and was described as a crucial prerequisite for implementing subsequent regulatory measures.

Immediately following, the Commission passed Resolution 06-2026-31, which imposes a two-year temporary moratorium on the construction, development, establishment, or operation of data centers within Cumberland County. The moratorium's purpose is to safeguard public health, safety, and welfare by allowing county officials, planners, utility providers, and other stakeholders ample time to thoroughly assess the potential impacts of large-scale data centers on critical infrastructure such as electrical grids, water resources, transportation, and emergency services, as well as overall community quality of life.

Both resolutions were passed unanimously, signaling a deliberate and measured approach by Cumberland County, reflecting similar strategies being adopted by other communities across Tennessee to develop informed, long-term policies for data center development.
