Candler County Commissioners table data center moratorium
Candler County Commissioners once again tabled a discussion on a data center moratorium and related zoning ordinance changes, following a previous tabling on September 8th. The decision came after residents urged the board to enact a moratorium and seek third-party assistance for data center negotiations. The city of Metter is also forming a data center task force, and two groups have contacted the county about potential data center projects.
The Candler County Board of Commissioners voted to table an agenda item concerning data center projects, zoning ordinances, and the potential adoption of a moratorium in unincorporated Candler County. This marks the second time the item has been tabled, having first been deferred on September 8th.
The decision followed a meeting where multiple residents advocated for a moratorium and requested the board to secure third-party expertise to assist with negotiations with prospective data center companies. Chairman Brad Jones and other commissioners indicated they required additional time and research before making a final decision, inviting public questions.
This development occurs a week after the city of Metter announced its intention to establish a data center task force. Additionally, Candler County Manager Bryan Aasheim revealed that two different groups have approached him regarding the possibility of locating data centers within the county.
