The Calexico City Council is set to convene on June 3 to deliberate on a significant policy agenda, including a proposed moratorium on data center development. The move to consider a temporary halt on data centers reflects a growing concern among Western municipalities regarding the substantial energy and water consumption associated with such technology infrastructure. The council will hold a public vote on this proposal.

In addition to the data center moratorium, the council will also review a sweeping public safety budgeting mandate. This ordinance would legally obligate the city to allocate 58% of its Unrestricted General Funds to police and fire services annually until 2047, with 30% designated for the Calexico Police Department and 28% for the Calexico Fire Department. This 20-year commitment aims to solidify public safety as the city's top financial priority.

Other items on the agenda include discussions on municipal enforcement measures, authorization for the city attorney to prosecute code violations, and potential infrastructure enhancements like a second entrance for the Hearthstone community. A $645,279.80 contract for the Weakley Street Improvement Project with Rove Engineering, Inc. is also up for a vote. Police Chief Orozco will present a new Citizen Reporting Application to improve resident interaction with law enforcement.
