Port Wentworth City Council to Review Residential Moratorium, Data Center Regulations Amid Resident Petition
Port Wentworth City Council is considering extending a moratorium on residential rezonings and has also recently paused approvals for data centers. Residents are actively organizing to gather signatures for a petition to implement a data center moratorium while the city council reviews ways to tighten existing ordinances related to data centers. The city council previously voted to approve language adding data centers to its zoning ordinances.
The Port Wentworth City Council is set to discuss extending a moratorium on residential rezonings at its upcoming monthly meeting. This marks the second proposed extension for the residential rezoning pause, which was initially imposed in July 2025 to allow the city to compile studies and develop action items for urban planning.
Separately, the city has already paused approvals for data centers, correctional facilities, and mobile homes. In December 2025, the city council voted 4-1 to approve language to incorporate data centers into its zoning ordinances. Following this, Port Wentworth residents recently began organizing to collect signatures for a petition aimed at implementing a formal moratorium on data centers, while the council continues to explore options to tighten relevant ordinances. The city also enacted a six-month moratorium on correctional facilities in February and on mobile homes in April to strengthen zoning regulations and address ordinance gaps.
