Data center public hearing set for Sept. 23
A public hearing is scheduled for September 23 in Adair County, Iowa, to discuss a resolution concerning data centers. This follows a temporary moratorium enacted in March due to concerns about the significant electricity and water demands of these facilities and their potential impact on residents. The county board is deliberating whether to implement a permanent moratorium or establish regulatory ordinances.
The Adair County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a public hearing for September 23 at 9:15 a.m. to discuss a resolution regarding data centers within the county. This hearing follows the board's approval of a temporary moratorium on data center construction in March.
The moratorium was initiated by Supervisor Jodie Hoadley, who expressed concerns about the high electricity and water consumption required by data centers and their potential impact on nearby residents. Hoadley advocated for the temporary pause to allow county officials sufficient time to study the facilities, obtain legal opinions, and consider whether to implement a permanent moratorium or develop appropriate ordinances to regulate data center construction, operation, and deconstruction. The proposed resolution emphasized ensuring safe operations, protecting property rights, and preserving county roads.
Board Chairman Jerry Walker, however, voiced concerns that a moratorium could discourage new businesses and hinder economic growth in Adair County, potentially leading to job losses. Hoadley countered that it is crucial for the county to proactively address such projects to protect taxpayers, rather than reacting once it is too late.
