The Athens City Council has indefinitely postponed all zoning decisions related to a proposed data center project following significant public outcry. Over 100 local residents attended a recent council meeting to vocalize their strong opposition to the development.
The planned data center, for which a company identified as Data Factory had expressed interest, prompted a comprehensive planning and zoning review process in the East Texas city. However, in response to the community's concerns, council members unanimously agreed to halt the current proceedings.
The council has decided to engage a third-party expert to further assess the proposal and community impact before bringing the issue back for reconsideration. A timeline for when the matter will reappear before the council has not yet been announced.
