Amazon is responding to growing community opposition to AI data centers by committing more than $1 billion over the next five years to education, workforce training, water preservation and other local initiatives. AWS CEO Matt Garman said the company is also addressing concerns about energy consumption, environmental effects and job creation.

The company plans to stop using nondisclosure agreements with local governments and publish annual reports on data center utility usage and efficiency. The outreach comes as Amazon forecasts roughly $220 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, much of it for data center development.
