Alexandria officials are reviewing data center regulations and have received additional videos supporting, opposing, and explaining potential development. The Planning Commission expects to begin public hearings on ordinance amendments in November 2026 and is considering either incorporating data centers into existing zoning districts or regulating them through a planned unit development or overlay district.

The Alexandria Planning Commission is continuing its study of potential data center development, adding public video presentations to the permanent record. City Planner Mike Weber said the commission expects to begin public hearings on possible ordinance amendments at its November 2026 meeting.

Staff plans to present two regulatory approaches: allowing data centers within existing zoning districts or treating them as a planned unit development or overlay district. The review is also informed by a 133-page University of Minnesota toolkit addressing water and energy considerations for local governments in southeastern Minnesota.
