The PAX-1 data center in Middlesex Township, Pennsylvania, has been exempted from new state-level GRID standards proposed by the Shapiro Administration, which aim to regulate data centers. This exemption is due to the project already being in the Fast Track permit program before the standards were introduced. Despite the exemption, the data center must still comply with existing environmental and local permitting requirements, and Middlesex Township officials plan to outline a community benefit agreement with the developers.

The PAX-1 data center, located in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, will not be required to adhere to the new GRID standards recently outlined by the Shapiro Administration. State officials confirmed that the project was granted an exemption because it had already entered the state's Fast Track permit program prior to the governor's budget proposal in February, which introduced these new regulations. The GRID initiative mandates that data center developers demonstrate how they will self-fund electricity, meet environmental benchmarks, generate local employment, and foster positive community relations to qualify for the Fast Track program.

The exemption has drawn mixed reactions from local residents. Eugene Albert, who resides near the PAX-1 site, expressed frustration, arguing that the project should be held to the same environmental and operational standards proposed by the governor to protect the community. Conversely, Randy Kirkpatrick, another local, supports the PAX-1 project but hopes the developers will voluntarily strive to meet the GRID initiative's objectives, even without a legal requirement.

While PAX-1 is exempt from the new GRID standards, a spokesperson for the Shapiro Administration clarified that the project is still subject to all other existing environmental and permitting requirements set by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and local authorities. Middlesex Township officials are scheduled to outline a community benefit agreement with the PAX-1 developers during an upcoming board of supervisors meeting, indicating ongoing local oversight and engagement.
