
US Data Centers Contribute to Rise in Coal Power Generation, Federal Report Says
A recent report from the Energy Information Administration indicates that U.S. power sector carbon emissions rose by 4% last year, reversing a decades-long trend of flat power consumption. This increase is largely attributed to a 13% rise in coal power generation, partially driven by the rapid growth of hyperscale data centers. Data centers, projected to consume over 10% of U.S. electricity by 2030, are prolonging the life of older coal plants and hindering the nation's efforts to decarbonize its electricity sector.
A recent Energy Information Administration (EIA) report reveals that carbon emissions from the U.S. power sector increased by 4% last year, a rate higher than the overall economic emissions growth. This rise reverses a long-standing trend of flat power consumption and is significantly driven by a 13% increase in coal power generation, fueled in part by the proliferation of large-scale data centers across the country.
Experts like Steve Piper, director of energy research at S&P Global Energy, note that the growing commercial load, particularly from data centers, is slowing the structural decline of coal use. Data centers, estimated to consume over 10% of U.S. electricity by 2030, operate continuously, demanding power even when renewable sources are low. This consistent demand has led to the extended operation of some aging coal plants, impacting national decarbonization efforts despite a simultaneous surge in solar and wind energy.
The increase in coal power is also influenced by rising natural gas prices, making coal a comparatively cheaper option, and increased political support for the coal industry. Although orders by Energy Secretary Chris Wright have sought to prevent the retirement of some coal plants, the EIA report indicates that the broader national increase in coal generation is widespread, with states like Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia significantly increasing their coal power output to meet data center demand. This trend poses a challenge to the U.S. goal of decarbonizing its electricity sector, a crucial step in meeting climate targets.
