Rookery and Roots Conservancy aims to protect wildlife 2 miles from OpenAI data center
A new conservancy has been founded in Effingham County, Georgia, to protect local wildlife and Gullah Geechee heritage amid rapid industrial development. This initiative is largely spurred by the planned $20 billion OpenAI data center set to be built less than two miles from the conservancy, raising significant environmental concerns among residents and the founder.
Isaiah Scott, a Rincon-native and Cornell University graduate, established the 16-acre Rookery and Roots Conservancy in Effingham County, Georgia, to safeguard local wildlife and the Gullah Geechee community's heritage. The conservancy's mission has gained urgency due to widespread industrial development in Coastal Georgia, specifically the planned $20 billion OpenAI data center located less than two miles from Scott's bird preserve. Scott, who grew up observing diverse bird species, expresses deep concern over the environmental impacts of such large-scale projects on local and migratory bird populations, air, water, and noise levels.
The OpenAI data center project, identified by the codename "Project Camellia," will undergo a standard permitting and review process, including a Land Disturbance Application and a site plan review by local authorities. Environmental groups like One Hundred Miles, represented by Jeff Beauvais, note that state and federal permits will also be required to ensure the development does not harm waterways or surrounding land. These permits may involve wetlands approval, noise studies, and reviews of threatened and endangered habitats.
Scott views the public backlash against the data center as an opportunity to amplify his advocacy. He continues to restore the conservancy land and fundraise for accessibility, aiming to establish a "living classroom" by 2027. His efforts are directed at inspiring younger generations and the broader community to protect and appreciate nature amidst increasing development.
