The Gilroy City Council is scheduled to vote on extending the city’s temporary moratorium on data center development for 10 months and 15 days. Residents have raised concerns about water and power use, noise, transparency, and the lack of opportunities for public input, while an Amazon data center already under construction would be exempt.

The Gilroy City Council is expected to consider a 10-month-and-15-day extension of the South Bay city’s temporary moratorium on new data center development. City staff are recommending the extension after community members voiced concerns about water and electricity demand, noise, transparency and public participation in project decisions.

The moratorium would not affect Amazon’s $2 billion data center, which is already under construction on 56 acres zoned for heavy industrial use. Residents will have the opportunity to address the council at its scheduled meeting in person or online.
