U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam has introduced the Data Infrastructure Risk Reduction Act, a federal bill designed to develop a comprehensive security strategy for communities located near data centers across the United States. The legislation was prompted by concerns from Rep. Subramanyam's constituents in Northern Virginia, an area with over 300 data centers, who expressed safety worries due to data centers becoming targets in international conflicts. According to a statement from the representative, the bill mandates the Department of Homeland Security to create a strategy and issue recommendations for protecting these communities and associated digital infrastructure. Furthermore, the proposed act requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to assess the security of vital transmission and water infrastructure connected to data centers. This assessment aims to identify and recommend measures to enhance the safety of residents living in proximity to these facilities. Rep. Subramanyam has also held listening sessions in Ashburn and Gainesville, Virginia, to gather direct feedback from residents.
