Oracle makes massive Texas wind investment to fuel AI growth

Oracle has announced a substantial investment in 10 wind-energy projects across Texas, which are projected to deliver over 1.7 gigawatts of carbon-free electricity to the ERCOT grid. This strategic move is intended to fuel the company's expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure, particularly its large data center campus in Abilene, Texas, parts of which are already operational.
Julia Robin, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's global head of infrastructure and planning, confirmed that this investment is critical for funding the electricity infrastructure required for Oracle's growing Texas operations, including the Abilene project and other potential developments in the state. Oracle has set an ambitious goal to match 100% of its AI data center electricity usage with carbon-free electricity by 2035.
In response to questions regarding the potential financial burden on local ratepayers, Robin reiterated Oracle's public commitment to cover all associated costs. She explained that the company is directly investing in new grid generation and transmission upgrades, and even developing on-site power where necessary, to ensure these expenses are borne by Oracle and not passed on to consumers. She also noted that any excess power generated could be made available to the grid for broader consumption, fully funded by Oracle.
