Residents and local townships in Ottawa County, Michigan, are actively opposing a proposed 200-megawatt solar farm by RWE Americas, seeking formal intervention in the state's regulatory review process. This comes as Zeeland Township had previously approved a data center moratorium, highlighting ongoing local debates about energy infrastructure development and land use ordinances. The township is also finalizing a renewable energy ordinance.

Neighbors in Zeeland and Jamestown townships, Ottawa County, Michigan, are intensifying their opposition to RWE Americas' proposed 200-megawatt Silver Maple Solar Farm. RWE Americas, a subsidiary of RWE, filed an application with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to construct the solar farm, bypassing local permitting efforts. Nearly 100 residents gathered for a workshop to learn how to petition to intervene in the state's regulatory process, which allows parties to submit information during hearings. Zeeland Township neighbor Valerie Driesenga expressed disappointment that local control was lost and that the project would change the area's character. Brad Pugh, co-owner of Ottawa Executive Airport, voiced concerns about the solar farm's proximity to the airport, stating it would "surround us here." Zeeland and Jamestown Townships have already secured intervener status, with Zeeland Township Manager Josh Eggleston noting their ongoing work on a renewable energy ordinance. This local effort comes after Zeeland Township previously approved a data center moratorium amidst wider debates on energy development. Residents, including Driesenga and Pugh, reported difficulties navigating the MPSC's complex process without clear guidance. Despite these challenges, residents were provided with guidelines at the workshop, and both the township and neighbors affirmed their commitment to an ongoing fight against the solar farm, asserting that the approval is not a done deal.
