The Montgomery County Council is preparing to introduce Expedited Bill 24-26, which proposes a two-year moratorium on building permits for data centers. The legislation, sponsored by Councilmember Will Jawando, seeks to prohibit the Department of Permitting Services (DPS) from issuing any new building permits for data centers for a period of two years after the bill's effective date.
A public hearing for this proposed data center moratorium is scheduled for June 16. The introduction of this bill is part of a broader legislative agenda for the Council's May 12 meeting, which also includes discussions on ghost gun restrictions, various supplemental appropriations for county departments like Emergency Management, Environmental Protection, and the Police Department, and a proposed increase in the County's income tax rate.
