Residents Voice Concerns Over Proposed Jefferson County Data Center
Residents expressed strong concerns about a proposed data center in Pine Creek Township, Jefferson County, highlighting its projected water consumption and potential environmental impacts. While the county currently lacks specific zoning to block such projects, it is developing new land-use ordinances, and Brookville Borough has already enacted a 180-day moratorium on data center development.
Residents of Pine Creek Township voiced significant concerns regarding a proposed data center during a recent Jefferson County Commissioners meeting. The primary issues raised include the facility's anticipated use of 1.2 million gallons of water daily and its potential adverse environmental effects.
The Jefferson County Commissioners acknowledged that the county currently lacks the necessary zoning or land-use regulations to prevent the project. However, they confirmed that the county is actively developing a Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO) and are encouraging local municipalities to establish their own regulatory frameworks.
Officials noted that both water and electricity demands associated with data centers remain critical concerns in the region. In response to these issues, Brookville Borough has already taken action by approving a 180-day moratorium on new data center developments.
