Hut 8, an AI infrastructure company, has seen its stock rise significantly after securing a second 15-year lease with a major, unnamed hyperscaler, a deal valued at nearly $10 billion. The company also announced the full commercialization of its 1-gigawatt Beacon Point AI Campus located in Texas. This marks a successful pivot for Hut 8 from cryptocurrency mining to AI infrastructure, generating approximately $27 billion in contracted AI revenue.
During a "Power Lunch" interview, Hut 8 CEO Asher Genoot emphasized that power is the most critical resource for the AI industry's growth, aligning with the company's thesis that power fuels technology. He highlighted that this deal reinforces the company's credibility and its customers' trust in their ability to power AI needs.
Genoot also addressed a New York Times report claiming that new data centers would add billions to electricity bills in the PJM region, which covers 13 Eastern states and the District of Columbia. He refuted this, stating that data center developers like Hut 8 typically pay for all necessary transmission upgrades and the energy bills themselves, thus enhancing rather than burdening community infrastructure and ratepayers. He cited examples of Hut 8's community contributions, such as donating water infrastructure and lending $10 million to a parish for public service salary increases.
