Amazon Data Center Project Nears Approval in Klein Township, Pennsylvania

Amazon's proposed large-scale data center project in Klein Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, is one step closer to approval. The Klein Township Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend the project, but only if a specific set of conditions are met. These conditions include a post-construction sound study, pre- and post-blasting surveys on nearby homes, and mandatory notification to the township before any future modifications.

The project, situated near Route 309 and Interstate 81, encompasses approximately 350 acres of clear-cut woodlands and proposes around 2 million square feet of data center buildings, alongside half a million square feet of administrative and accessory buildings, all to be owned and operated by Amazon.

Local residents have actively opposed the project for over a year, expressing concerns about its impact on their community. Residents voiced worries about potential noise, likening it to a refrigerator running 24/7, and the negative effect on their property values, especially for homes located just 300 feet from the site. Despite the opposition, the Planning Commission's recommendation moves the project forward.

The final decision now rests with the Klein Township Supervisors, who are scheduled to vote on the project's fate on Wednesday. If the conditions outlined by the Planning Commission are not met, the project risks being shut down.
