The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council voted unanimously Oct. 8 to extend Fayette County's existing moratorium on data center construction through Oct. 31, 2027. The measure prevents data centers from receiving approval while officials consider longer-term development restrictions.

The extension followed testimony from more than 60 residents, most of whom urged the council to continue the pause. Proposed rules would prohibit large or hyperscale data centers throughout the county, while a separate zoning category for facilities under 40,000 square feet is being developed and will return to the planning commission before a possible council vote Oct. 22.
