AI backlash in NEPA: crayons, comment sections and cancellations
The article examines how generative AI is affecting businesses, musicians and community discussions in Northeast Pennsylvania, including debate within the Stop Archbald Data Centers Facebook group. It also describes local criticism of AI-generated content and a concert cancellation after an online dispute over alleged AI use.
Generative AI has become a source of both convenience and controversy in Northeast Pennsylvania. Pittston meal-prep business owner Michael Langdon used AI to create a temporary storefront image, but removed it after criticism and an embarrassing misspelling; he now uses hand-drawn and intentionally crude promotional materials instead.
AI has also fueled tensions among data center opponents, artists and local businesses. Members of the Stop Archbald Data Centers Facebook group argued over an AI-related Fourth of July image, while Archbald musician CJ Nelson, who performs as Soul Avon, objected to his work allegedly being used to train AI models without compensation. At Union Vapors 570 in Dickson City, criticism of a concert advertisement as AI-generated escalated online and led all four scheduled bands to withdraw, resulting in the concert’s cancellation.
