India's data-centre capacity may surge to 24-26 GW, impact on overall power demand to remain limited: CEA Chairman
Central Electricity Authority Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad said India’s data-center capacity could grow from less than 2 GW to 24–26 GW. He said the associated electricity demand has already been incorporated into national power projections and generation plans.
Central Electricity Authority Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad said India’s data-center capacity could expand to 24–26 gigawatts from less than 2 gigawatts currently. He said the increase would represent a limited share of total national electricity demand because it has already been incorporated into future power-demand projections and generation planning.
Speaking at an AI-focused power-sector event in New Delhi, Prasad emphasized the need to maintain adequate generation capacity and highlighted India’s renewable-energy targets of about 500 GW by 2030 and 800 GW by 2035–36. He also said energy storage is developing rapidly and called for wider adoption of smart meters to improve visibility across the electricity network.
