Upper Hanover Township residents celebrate withdrawal of data center proposal; officials question developer’s intentions
Hanover Development Limited Partnership withdrew its application to build a 150,000-square-foot data center in Upper Hanover Township after months of community opposition. Township officials questioned the proposal’s feasibility and said the developer is now considering residential development, which would require a zoning change.
Residents in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, are celebrating the withdrawal of Hanover Development Limited Partnership’s proposal for a 150,000-square-foot data center. The developer cited community opposition, while local residents organized through the Upper Perkiomen Valley Data Center Opposition group and raised concerns about the project’s effects on the rural community.
Township Manager Anne Klepfer said officials had questioned the project’s feasibility because the plans did not account for underground gas pipelines and electrical lines. The developer is considering housing on the property, but the land is zoned for light industrial use and any residential proposal would require township approval for a zoning change.
