Cromwell's Planning and Zoning Commission is considering a six-month moratorium on new data centers after a proposed facility near homes and a school drew opposition. Developer Global Commons says the project would use little water, rely on natural-gas fuel cells, create up to 125 jobs and generate millions in annual revenue for the town.

Cromwell's Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to consider a six-month moratorium on new data centers. The discussion follows a proposal by Global Commons to develop a roughly 12-acre facility near homes and a school, although the developer has not yet submitted an official application.

Residents including Juan Duk oppose the project, citing concerns about noise, air quality and water use, and some are seeking to close a perceived loophole in town rules that could make approval easier. Global Commons says the facility would be set back from nearby homes and the school, use little water and be powered by quiet, clean natural-gas fuel cells. The developer estimates the project could create up to 125 jobs, provide millions of dollars in annual town revenue and cover about half of homeowners' electric bills. The commission previously rejected a 12-month moratorium in September.
