Caren Lowrey, a certified prevention and education specialist, penned an opinion column in The Morning Call, arguing that the ongoing debate surrounding a proposed Atlas data center near Parkland High School in the Lehigh Valley has overlooked a critical aspect: its potential impact on the more than 3,000 students attending the school.

Lowrey, who works with students in the Lehigh Valley navigating various challenges, emphasized that a supportive and stable environment is fundamental to learning and emotional well-being. She highlighted that while community discussions have focused on traffic, stormwater management, utility capacity, zoning, and economic impact, the educational environment and student mental health have not received similar scrutiny.

The author, a Parkland graduate and parent, questioned whether a 24-hour industrial campus directly across from such a large high school could affect students' ability to feel safe and regulated, essential conditions for learning. She noted that schools intentionally create conditions to reduce stressors and support emotional regulation.

Lowrey called for comprehensive studies on the project's impact on the educational environment to be conducted and made public before any final decisions are made, asserting that students deserve to be part of the conversation when a decision could shape their school's environment for decades.
