Stratos Data Center and Utah Military Connections
FOX 13 reports on connections between the proposed Stratos data center in Box Elder County and planned improvements for Utah National Guard facilities. Supporters say the project could generate funding and provide computing capacity for military and artificial-intelligence applications, while opponents have raised concerns and pursued legislative action.
The proposed Stratos data center in Box Elder County is linked to planned improvements for Utah National Guard facilities through the Utah Military Installation Development Authority, or MIDA. Public documents and meetings reviewed by FOX 13 indicate that MIDA is considering ways to use revenue associated with the development to support military properties and projects, including a replacement armory, a helicopter hangar in Cedar City, and improvements at Camp Williams.
Developer O'Leary told FOX 13 that the site is well positioned because of its fiber connectivity, power and proximity to defense personnel and infrastructure. Supporters also say the facility could provide computing and data-storage capacity for military missions and artificial intelligence. Critics, including some state lawmakers and local residents, have opposed the Stratos project and discussed legislation addressing its military connections, although the report says such efforts are not expected to stop the development.
