Leaders impressed by turnout at Goshen Township town hall meeting

A town hall meeting was held in Goshen Township, Pennsylvania in response to rumors of a potential AI data center being planned for the area. Over 100 concerned residents attended the meeting to voice their opposition and concerns. State Senator Wayne Langerholc and State Representative Dallas Kephart confirmed that there are no known permit applications or concrete plans for a data center in Goshen Township. However, residents discussed the need to be proactive in monitoring development in their community, as some had received unsolicited offers to purchase land. The meeting also covered the separate issue of a Bitcoin mining operation in nearby Karthaus Township that had received an air quality permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Clearfield County Commissioner John Sobel, who also serves as the solicitor for Karthaus Township, clarified that the permit was indeed for the Bitcoin mining facility, not a data center. Residents voiced concerns over the potential environmental, sustainability, and quality of life impacts of large-scale data center or cryptocurrency operations. They called for the township to consider implementing zoning regulations and a moratorium on such development to allow more time for study and public input.
