During an affordability tour in Gainesville, Governor Abbott announced new steps to halt data center construction and increase regulatory oversight, stating the industry was "completely out of control." Abbott emphasized the goal to broaden the hurdles data centers must clear and ensure any requiring permits in Texas come to a halt.

Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa expressed skepticism about the Governor's actions, particularly his plan to require data centers to provide their own power and water, suggesting his "pause" could be reversed after the election. This new position contrasts sharply with Abbott's previous enthusiastic support for data center investments, such as Google's $40 billion AI development announcement last November. Abbott also voiced support for empowering local governments to make decisions on data center approvals.
