The approved DCO District specifically allows for data center development, revising a residential zone to industrial to accommodate the overlay. This change applies to a 132-acre parcel owned by the borough, making data centers a conditional use within the new district.
Environmental organizations, including Berks Nature and the Hay Creek Watershed Association, reacted negatively to the council's vote. Tami Shimp, president of Berks Nature, commended residents for speaking out about land use and advocated for environmentally-informed policies.
Borough officials, however, maintained that their actions represent 'proactive planning' for potential future development in the area.
