Gov: Hawkins County Commission, Hawkins County
ExoticRidge has initiated a lawsuit against Hawkins County, Tennessee, contending that the county's actions violate its rights to equal protection under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Tennessee Constitution. The company is challenging a ban that prevents it from establishing a cryptocurrency mine, seeking not only the overturn of the ban but also the right to operate the mine and compensatory damages. During a recent meeting, the Hawkins County Commission discussed its strategy for confronting this legal challenge. Commissioner Robbie Palmer, working alongside attorney Crystal Jesse, informed the commission that they have identified the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), a prominent nonprofit public interest law firm, to potentially represent the county. George Nolan, Director of SELC's Tennessee Office, expressed the firm's willingness to provide pro bono legal services to defend Hawkins County, emphasizing the importance of protecting the local environment. County officials have voiced significant reservations about the environmental and public health implications associated with cryptocurrency mining operations. Commissioner Palmer noted that while there is much unknown about the long-term health effects, ample information suggests negative impacts. County Mayor Mark DeWitte reiterated that the commission's priority is the "health, safety and convenience of the citizens" and that the community expects them to vigorously oppose the lawsuit. The Hawkins County Commission is scheduled to review the pro bono contract with SELC and pass a resolution at its upcoming regular meeting, aiming to formally engage the environmental law center in their defense. ExoticRidge is being represented in the lawsuit by the Beacon Center of Tennessee.
