Musician Dave Matthews drew attention to the plight of Canton, North Carolina, a town grappling with the aftermath of a major paper mill closure and now facing a proposed data center project.

Matthews introduced a song inspired by the documentary "Paper Town," explaining that the mill, which had been the town's economic backbone for 115 years, was shut down by a new owner. The owner opted to consolidate production at other facilities for increased profitability, leaving the community "pretty broken up."

He noted that the town of Canton is now actively opposing a proposed data center, adding to their challenges. Matthews shared this context before performing with his friend Brandy.
