Mount Pleasant leaders approved a two-year moratorium barring the granting, processing or acceptance of permits for hyperscale data centers. Officials said the pause will give the town time to address zoning requirements, natural-resource impacts and energy rates before any large data center applications are submitted.
The Mount Pleasant Town Council approved a two-year moratorium on Oct. 13, 2026, prohibiting hyperscale data centers and temporarily halting the granting, processing or acceptance of permits for large data centers. Councilman Daniel Brownstein said the issue involves the town’s zoning code, natural resources and energy rates.
Mount Pleasant currently has no applications for a large-scale data center, but the moratorium gives town leaders time to consider future land-use requirements and restrictions. The planning commission has begun discussing data center regulations and is scheduled to continue those discussions at an Oct. 21 meeting. The data center update appeared in a broader Post and Courier roundup of Charleston-area events and municipal actions.
