He argued that China strategically promotes narratives to hinder American data center development and reliance on renewable energy, aiming for the U.S. to fall behind in intelligence and energy leadership.
McCormick emphasized the importance of cheap, affordable energy for the American economy and praised efforts to build nuclear facilities and streamline energy production. He proposed a creative solution for energy generation, suggesting that retired nuclear modules from Navy vessels, which have a strong safety record, could be plugged into the national grid. The Secretary agreed on the phenomenal performance of such reactors and the creativity of the idea, though noted the scale needed for the grid would be larger.
The discussion also covered China's attempts to corner the market on critical minerals and rare earth elements like lithium and cobalt. McCormick highlighted the disadvantage this poses to the U.S. and questioned what is being done to secure America's future in these resources. The Department of Energy representative confirmed that the DOE's critical minerals and energy innovation department is actively working with local mines, processors, and manufacturers in the United States to extract and utilize these essential materials, aiming to reverse dependence on China. McCormick concluded by expressing his desire for a focus on science rather than what he termed "the religion of global climate change."
