Meta partners with the Town of Delhi to ease Data Center expansion’s impact on water system
Meta is partnering with the Town of Delhi, Louisiana, for its data center expansion in Richland Parish. Meta will cover costs related to water system improvements and build a new wastewater treatment plant to prevent water rate increases for residents. The Sierra Club expresses concerns about the data center's water usage potentially straining agriculture in the area.
Meta is collaborating with the Town of Delhi, Louisiana, to manage the impact of its significant data center expansion in Richland Parish on the local water system. Delhi Mayor Jesse Washington announced that Meta has agreed to cover all associated costs, ensuring that local water rates for residents will not be affected by the increased demand.
As part of the agreement, Meta will not only fund improvements to the current water system but also construct a new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant in Dunn. This new facility is expected to help the town manage the increased water and sewage demands from the data center, with the town receiving revenues from its operation. The plant is anticipated to open sometime next year.
However, the expansion has raised environmental concerns. Margie Vicknair-Pray of the Sierra Club expressed worries that the data center's substantial water usage could put a strain on agriculture in the area. She noted that data centers will "definitely compete with the agriculture in the area" for water, urging vigilance regarding this potential impact on local farmers.
