Grimes considering resolution to block data centers from financial incentives
Grimes officials are considering a resolution to regulate future data centers before any project has been proposed in the city. The measure would bar data centers from receiving financial incentives, placing excess demand on water supplies, or increasing residents’ electricity bills, and would require cooling-system standards and transparency.
The Grimes City Council plans to vote Oct. 27 on a resolution intended to establish safeguards for future data center development. The proposal would prevent data centers from receiving tax or other financial incentives, adding excessive demand to the city’s water system, or raising electricity bills for residents.
The resolution would also require data centers to use cooling systems and provide greater transparency. Mayor David Gish said Grimes has not received a data center proposal, but city officials want to act proactively to protect the community before development is proposed.
