The Emmet County Board of Supervisors in Northwest Iowa unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data center developments during a recent meeting in Estherville. The decision was made as a precautionary measure, allowing the county time to research and establish regulations concerning data center impacts.
Lisa Hansen, chairman of the Emmet County Board of Supervisors, stated that the board identified "too many unknowns" regarding potential data center projects. Key concerns include health implications, significant water usage, and substantial energy demands. Hansen acknowledged potential tax benefits for the county but emphasized the necessity of understanding and mitigating environmental and community effects beforehand.
The moratorium will temporarily ban data center projects on properties overseen by Emmet County for one year. No specific data center inquiries or proposals have been made in the county to date; thus, the action was entirely proactive.
