Baldwin County approves 180-day moratorium on rezoning requests, data centers
The Baldwin County Commission approved a 180-day moratorium on rezoning requests, new data centers and renewable energy projects in zoned areas. Officials said the pause will give the county time to hire a planning director and update its master plan before considering future development proposals.
The Baldwin County Commission approved a 180-day moratorium covering rezoning requests, new data centers and renewable energy projects within zoned areas. The moratorium includes exceptions for certain residential building permits and previously approved renewable energy projects and data centers.
Commissioners Jeb Ball, Matt McKenzie and Billie Jo Underwood supported the pause, citing the absence of a planning director and the need to update the county’s master plan. Underwood said the measure is intended to establish a framework for managing continued growth, while acknowledging that the county is not currently aware of any specific data center proposals.
