The Lexington Urban County Council unanimously approved a data center moratorium during a recent Tuesday work session. The measure, which immediately went into effect, was announced by Councilmember Emma Curtis and further elaborated upon by Councilmember Tyler Morton of the 1st District.

According to Councilmember Morton, the council has also initiated a zoning ordinance text amendment with the city's planning commission to establish comprehensive regulations for data centers. He stated this action provides local leaders and the community an opportunity to carefully evaluate the potential impacts, benefits, and long-term implications of such facilities in Lexington before further development.

Mayor Linda Gorton voiced her strong support for the moratorium, emphasizing the need for careful consideration regarding data centers. She highlighted concerns that these facilities generate few jobs and have the potential to escalate utility costs for residents. The Mayor reiterated her stance against providing public incentives for data center projects, a position she previously communicated to DartPoints following their acquisition of Lexmark's former New Circle Road property.
