Proposal for Clayton County data center withdrawn
A proposal by Stillwater Development for a 1.25GW data center campus in Lovejoy, Georgia, was formally withdrawn during a city council meeting. The project, which included 15 buildings, faced concerns regarding increased traffic congestion near local schools. Developers now plan to pursue residential development on the site instead.
Stillwater Development has formally withdrawn its proposal for a significant data center campus in Lovejoy, Georgia. The decision was made during a special city council meeting held on Thursday, where the withdrawal was the sole agenda item.
The proposed development, initially filed in December, encompassed a 3.5 million-square-foot site intended to house 15 buildings with a total capacity of 1.25GW. The planned location at 11760 Panhandle Road raised concerns due to its proximity to Michelle Obama STEM Elementary Academy and Eddie White Middle School. The city of Lovejoy's Developments of Regional Impact submission highlighted that existing high traffic congestion on Panhandle Road, exacerbated by school traffic, would face "considerable impact and delays" from additional data center traffic.
Lovejoy Mayor Marci Fluellyn confirmed that Stillwater Development is now pursuing residential development for the site. Lovejoy is notable as it is not subject to Clayton County’s wider moratorium on data center development, making it one of the few areas in the county where such construction is currently permitted. Fluellyn expressed continued commitment to building a stronger Lovejoy despite the project's conclusion.
