The project is designed to address common concerns about data centers, particularly regarding electricity consumption and water usage. Key partners include SB Energy and Nvidia, with significant investments in infrastructure and technology.
OpenAI has unveiled plans for a colossal data center in Pike County, Ohio, securing a 20-year lease on a site that could become one of the world's largest, potentially generating up to eight gigawatts of computing power. The project, estimated to cost as much as $500 billion, is projected to create 35,000 construction jobs over a six-year period until 2032, followed by 2,500 long-term operating positions.
The initiative is explicitly positioned to assuage public concerns regarding data center development. Republican Senator Bernie Moreno lauded the project on social media, highlighting its benefits such as no taxpayer subsidies, positive environmental impacts, community financial contributions, and self-generated power. OpenAI emphasized its intention for the center to serve as a "catalyst for jobs, business growth, and investment across Southern Ohio."
Collaboration with key partners is central to the project. SB Energy, a subsidiary of the Japanese investment firm SoftBank, will bear the full cost of necessary grid and transmission line upgrades, ensuring Ohio residents are not burdened with electricity costs. The facility also commits to water recirculation to minimize demand. Nvidia will exclusively supply chips and provide a guarantee of up to $105 billion on the conditional lease and power obligations to SB Energy, effectively backing the asset value.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed pride in locating the facility in Pike County, envisioning long-term benefits for the local community through jobs and investment. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang underscored the project's significance for scaling AI infrastructure, referring to it as an "AI factory." This announcement comes at a time when other regions, notably Texas, are implementing moratoriums on data center development amidst growing public scrutiny.
