Helena leaders consider temporary suspension on data centers

Helena, Alabama city leaders are weighing a new ordinance that would impose a 180-day temporary suspension on data centers, gas stations, mechanic shops, and car dealerships. The proposed ban, placed before the Helena City Council, aims to halt the acceptance and processing of building permits, site plans, and other official approvals for these businesses within specified corridors along Highways 17, 58, 95, and 52.
According to City Council member Jeff McDaniels, the pause is necessary to prevent negative impacts on the community's overall character, health, safety, and general welfare. Helena City Council President Brooke Dodson stated the action allows the City Council and Planning and Zoning Commission ample time to review and update the existing Planning and Zoning Ordinance. She emphasized the need for the community to analyze issues associated with data centers and their potential effects on infrastructure, environment, and neighborhoods.
The ordinance, which cites potential environmental risks such as increased air and noise pollution, water and energy consumption, and increased traffic, was first introduced the week of August 13. Council members are scheduled to review it again at their upcoming meeting on August 24.
