The Mason City Council recently convened to address the contentious issue of rezoning a predominantly residential area for a potential new data center. Residents expressed a wide range of opinions, with those living in the affected area strongly protesting the proposed change to a commercial zone.
Joanne Purdy, a Mason City resident, voiced her opposition to the rezoning and the prospective data center, highlighting concerns shared by many about the significant demand on electricity and extensive water usage associated with data center operations. Conversely, Joe Durby, Business Manager with Ironworkers Local 67, advocated for the rezoning, emphasizing the substantial job opportunities it would create for local ironworkers.
Additional residents, including Ben DiMarco and Brady Edwards, conveyed their frustration and urged the council to carefully consider all options regarding the rezoning. After hearing comments from both proponents and opponents, the council concluded the session, indicating that they would take all feedback into consideration before making a decision.
