The Louisville Planning and Zoning Committee recently tabled a new temporary moratorium on data centers. This decision comes as the University of Louisville (UofL) began a weekly webinar series to inform the community about these projects, acknowledging their controversial nature.

Kentucky is home to 37 data centers, 24 of which are in Jefferson County. This number is set to increase with the upcoming Campground Road data center, which will be the Commonwealth's first hyper-scale facility.

During UofL's webinar, electrical engineering PhD candidate Mohana Gutta discussed the benefits and drawbacks of data centers. Positives include increased tax revenue, support for AI development, and job creation. However, concerns were raised about the high water and power demands of hyper-scale data centers, their contribution to air pollution and carbon emissions, and the significant space they require. Gutta emphasized the necessity of data centers for daily digital life and stressed the importance of building responsible, resilient, and publicly aligned AI era infrastructure.
