The decision, which will be in effect until December 31, 2027, was prompted by expressed interest from data center companies, including "Edge Compute Data Center," which plans to invest over $120 million in an existing vacant building.
City leaders and council members emphasized the need for time to study the potential impacts of data centers and to develop appropriate ordinances concerning issues like noise, water, and electricity consumption. Dozens of residents spoke during public comment, overwhelmingly supporting the moratorium and advocating for a complete ban on data center development in Elkhart. Councilman David Henke, despite voting for the moratorium, indicated he would still support future data center development.
